Straddie!
So......yesterday we were up early and did a 'Woolies' shop before packing the car and leaving Celtis St at 11.30 am. We drove to Cleveland to catch the Stradbroke Ferry at 1.00 pm. It was a little bit late we left the mainland around 1.20 pm and sailed across the bay to Dunwich on North Stradbroke Island.Once off the ferry we headed towards Point Lookout and found Adder Rock Camping Ground. The chap in the office must have been new because he could not work the computer and a woman had to come and help him.....we were stood there at least 10 minutes before they found the right page they were looking for to confirm our booking.....the joys of technology! We were told we could pick any where we wanted to camp which was great because on the booking website they were all different prices and ones down by the beach were more expensive.....we hadn't booked one of those but it was looking like we could go down there if we wanted.Just when that happy thought was settling in my head, the woman ruined it by saying:"You might want to steer clear of the beach camping area as there is a school party down there."We found a nice spot in the centre of the camping ground and set up our tent. Once all was shipshape we headed down to the beach and ended up walking all the way down the beautiful deserted beach to Point Lookout and then walked back on the road.Once it got dark the 'Mosquitoes from Hell' descended on us and we quickly had to dose ourselves in repellent....which did not seem to have much effect. We had set up our tent underneath a sleeping Tawny Frogmouth and before it flew off for a night of revelry it evacuated its avian bowels all over our tent. Will spotted some Sugar Gliders leaping from tree to tree. At first I thought he was mad because I could see nothing but then I saw one too. They are a bit like squirrels but have a flap of skin between their front and back legs and scamper up trees and the leap off and glide with arms and legs outstretched to another tree. There were Stone Curlews around too that utter an eerie wailing sound in the night but luckily none came near us to disturb our sleep. After a night wander on the beach we both slept ok for our first night in a tent in ages and rose about 8.00 am.I made poached eggs on toast for breakfast which we had to eat with spoons because we had no knives......we thought we did have them when we packed but it turned out we didn't.We headed off about 9.30 back towards Dunwich and drove to Brown Lake. Will had been before and said that he had walked from Dunwich to it. The road looked long and boring and I said that "I would hate to have to walk down it."We found Brown Lake and lo, and behold there was another school party down by the water. As soon as we got out of the car they started chanting and shouting.I was convinced that they were shouting "WHAT'S THAT SMELL!!!".....but it turned out to be "WHAT DOES THAT SPELL?"We quickly wandered away to try and escape the noise they were making which absolutely ruined the peace of that place. We did not intend to walk all the way round the lake but kept on following a track and eventually found ourselves across the other side of the lake."WHAT'S THAT SMELL?"....was still shattering the peace.Eventually we left the sound behind and seemed to be leaving the lake behind too....we wondered where the track was taking us and we ended up on a golf course. To top it all....a cruel twist of fate found us walking back down the long and boring road back to the Brown Lake turn off. We arrived back in time for more chanting and yelling "WHAT'S THAT SMELL?"When the shouting was over they all got on their buses and headed off and I waved cheerily after them and we had our lunch in the peace and quiet. After lunch we drove further on to Blue Lake. They had fun naming these places of interest didn't they?On Trip Advisor lots of people had complained about the 'long' walk to Blue Lake.....it was only 5.2km return.....hardly long.We were pestered by horse flies trying to probe us for our juices all the way.Blue Lake was slightly blue but it was not worth a 5.2 km walk and I would never bother to go there again.....ever. I was glad to get back to Roxy.We headed on down the road and eventually came to Main Beach. It is 32 kms long and a highway for four wheel drive cars. We didn't take Roxy on it as we would probably never have got her off again. We headed back to Dunwich for an ice cream and drink and then stopped at Myora Springs. Another load of school children were sat all over the boardwalk blocking our passage so we headed off and went to Amity Point at the top of the island. We had a look around and another quick beach stroll to look across to Moreton Island further north and then drove back to Point Lookout. We did the beautiful Gorge Walk along the cliff path. We spotted a woman searching the sea with her binoculars."Have you seen a whale?" I asked."No, there is a yellow kayak out there with no-one on it. That's not good is it?""Hurrumph!"I was disappointed it was not a whale. We saw a large pod of Dolphins from the cliffs and had a great view down Main Beach. After our walk we had Fish Basket for 2 and sat on Captain Cook's seat, looking out over the sea, to eat them. There was far too much and we ended up throwing lots away......in a bin obviously.Back at the camp site the Mosquitoes were overjoyed to see us and had invited friends along too.
