Trial Bay Gaol.
After another walk this morning on the beach at Smoky Cape we headed to Trial Bay Gaol near South West Rocks.I thought it have been for the early convicts sent to Australia but it was more recent than that...well, early 1900's. It was built to house prisoners brought to the area to build a breakwater but the sea proved too powerful and the job was eventually abandoned. Between 1915 and 1918 it was used to house German detainees during the war and later still was stripped of most of it's metal work and abandoned. Local Aboriginal people moved into the ruins for some time after that.
We have now driven north to Ashby and are having a couple of nights by the River Clarence.
