"Bloody Pigweed!"

The ‘Mole’ People came today.(Actually they are the ‘Mower’ People, who cut the grass but when we first heard Dulcie talk about them we both thought she was saying ‘Mole People’...and the name stuck.)When the ‘Mole’ People had gone the, soon to be, 91 year old whirlwind was off down the steps and I found her sat on a pink plastic bag on the grass under the front steps trimming the plants. She was being quite ruthless with the secateurs and quite a pile of discarded shrubbery was building up. I wheeled the bin closer and was drawn into binning the off cuts and the next thing I knew I was handed the secateurs as some of the stems were too thick for her to cut. When I was finished I thought I had been ruthless enough but obviously had not done it as she would have and she spent another 10 minutes trimming more off. Then she started under the lowest steps and was almost lying prostrate on the grass to reach the weeds under there. I busied myself with the brush so it did not look as if I was being idle and with me around I hoped that if a neighbour happened to glance out of their window they would not come rushing out at the sight of an old lady lying awkwardly at the bottom of her steps.“It all looks good to me,” I said at last, hoping that she was finishing off but she headed off to another bed,“Bloody pigweed,” she said ripping up handfuls. I had never heard of pigweed.I helped her clear it all but then I was asked to fetch the hose pipe and she began to water the garden then the steps and then the garage windows. She ended up watering all the plants in the fernery too before she finally came in and sat down.Tonight I am off to the cinema on my own as Will is out at a staff meeting. It will be the first time I have driven into the city on my own.Ooh, er.
