A Further Tale of Two 'Titty's'.
So...yesterday I was back in the Prep to Year 2 class at the small school. The last time I was there I was covering for the class teacher who was on a cruise but today she was having the day to do some planning for next year.I found her in the 'Happy Feet Room'. I introduced myself and she introduced me to the Teacher Aide, Mrs M (she had the name of a grumpy soap opera character)."Hello," I said, "so you are the one who drew the 'stort shaw'.....the 'stort shaw?'... I mean the short straw."I must have made a great first impression.I hadn't see any planning for the day and the class teacher sat down and scribbled down a rough timetable of the day. This week is the last week of the school year here in Australia before they break up for the summer holiday. It turned out that a parent was coming in to do some tile painting and there was a second Teacher Aide in all morning too. ( She was the one who was with me last time.) The class teacher wanted the children to wash their trays and chairs. She said she had let them play all day yesterday and I could do that But I said I had a frog mask that they could make. After Morning Tea she said that they could watch a movie and after lunch she said they enjoyed the games I played last time and that I could do that again. It all seemed very easy and was very loosely planned. She said that she was only expecting about nine children in. She said "B won't be here today as he wanted to stay home and watch the cattle get A.I'd"."Oh, it's like a different world" I laughed, "where children stay home to watch cows get artificially inseminated.""Yes, he's my son," said the class teacher, " we are trying a new breed."My first impression was just getting better. There were 9 at roll call and only one of the 'Titty's', 'Titty Z', so the day was looking fine...but as the morning went on 'Titty N' turned up and then another girl so there were 11 in all.The children were busy painting tiles, cleaning trays and chairs and Mrs M was getting them to put glitter on some Christmas lanterns. I had a small group making frog masks. The 'Titty's' were a little hyper but the different activities kept everything interesting and we survived until Morning tea without incident. I spent the whole time they were outside searching Youtube for suitable films for them to watch when they came back in."See what you can find" the class teacher had said helpfully.I found the 'Snowman' and something called ' The Town That Santa Forgot' and another called 'The Naughty List.'They came back in after break and we sat down in front of the TV."Can I get a drink of water?" Asked one."No!" snapped Mrs M before I could speak."Well, there is your answer" I said. They got cushions and all lay down and we watched 'The Snowman'. There was not a peep. When it was finished I put on 'The Town That Santa Forgot.' It was dreadful, very American and narrated by Dick Van Dyke but they sat quietly throughout. I couldn't bear to face 'The Naughty List' so we played games up to lunch.I had a 15 minute duty at Lunch. It was a very long 15 minutes. some of them had been digging a huge hole in the sand pit and others wanted to spoil it and it was all I could do to keep the older ones away and try to get the diggers all working together.Lunch ended with three Junior boys arguing, calling each other names and finally fighting and I had to break them up and report them to the Principal. It turned out to be the final straw and they were told that they were no longer allowed to go on the whole school visit to the Granite Belt Maze the following day. I bet they thanked me for that...but I don't care. They deserved it for their awful behaviour.Three of my class, including 'Titty N' also misbehaved as we were lining up and Mrs M marched them all off to sit on the 'Verandah(?)'.I took the other eight back to class. I couldn't face more games so I gave them all a pebble that I had coloured green and drawn eyes on and told them it was a very rare blackeyed rock frog and that we were going outside to build a shelter for them. The three 'Verandah' victims returned intermittently and I was able to waste a good three quarters of an hour letting them build frog houses. By the time we got back to class it was nearly time to go home. They all wanted to sing the frog song that I had taught them so we did that and then the class teacher turned up to hand out their report cards and my day was over."Have a great Christmas. We'll definitely have you back next year," said the Principal as I left.I am not sure I want to.
